Community Development Department
The City of Lake Forest Park Community Development Department reviews and issues construction and land use permits and advises the public and the Planning Commission, Climate Action Committee, Climate Policy Advisory Team, Tree Board, Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee, Hearing Examiner, and City Council. The Department is tasked with high-level public service in advance planning, current planning, economic development, and land use code enforcement.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to fairly implement and enforce the City’s development and environmental codes and to assist elected and appointed officials in creating policies and regulations that will facilitate community visions and encourage stewardship of the natural environment. We are committed to helping citizens realize their property improvement objectives while working within the framework of the regulations and municipal processes.
Objectives
- Provide accurate and understandable information to all applicants and citizens in a courteous and professional manner.
- Conduct an efficient and predictable review of permit applications and work proactively with applicants to navigate the regulatory process.
- Be responsive to citizens who are concerned about development projects proposed by others by facilitating access to project application materials and providing clear and informative responses to their questions about proposed projects and the City’s regulations.

- Can a home business store goods, materials, or products outside their home?

No - a home business must be conducted wholly within the home or garage / accessory structure area, with the exception of play equipment related to a home daycare business.
- Is a permit required for all permanent signs in the city? Is there a cost?

Yes. A sign permit must be obtained to install a new, altered, or relocate a sign. Fees are based primarily on the estimated value of the proposed sign. Any business applying for a sign permit will also need to obtain a City of Lake Forest Park business license.
- What are the rules for political signs?

Political signs may be placed on public rights-of-way or on private property with permission of the owner. However, they must be situated in such a way so as to not create a traffic or safety hazard. All political signs must be removed within five days following the election.
